My previous music recommendations have taken you on a global journey encompassing Iceland, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland and Australia. So now let’s pay a visit to Germany.
With profound apologies to our members who live in that wonderful country, the structure of the German language sometimes scans awkwardly in songs and many mainstream German artists sing in English. However, there’s one group I discovered about four years ago that makes language immaterial. Good music is good music, whatever the tongue.
The group is Klee, from Köln, whose singer Suzie Kerstgens could sing in any language she wants and make it sound sexy and full of feeling.
I have two of their albums – “Jelängerjelieber” (meaning ‘Honeysuckle’), released in 2004, and “Zwischen Himmel Und Erde” (‘Between Heaven and Earth’), from 2006.
They are an acoustic-based band with keyboard and electric guitar accompaniment, complementing Suzie’s soft and melodic vocals. Some of their earlier stuff is a bit electro, and they can be a bit more upbeat too, in songs such as “Gold” and “Mein Geheimnis” (‘My Secret’). My favourites are the aforementioned “Gold”, “Tausendfach” (‘A Thousand Times’) and “Zwei Fragen” (‘Two Questions’).
There’s loads of stuff on Youtube. Search for ‘Klee’ or ‘Suzie Kerstgens’ for more:
