I also read a lot of stupid comments about the Bells after their Coldplay gigs. I don't understand that - to me as a Coldplay fan the two bands seem to have some musical similarities especially when you listen to the very early Coldplay. So these people have perhaps forgotten the musical roots they have in common.
Some were like "the HBs kinda ruined the evening" or "their music is too depressing for a Coldplay opening act " or "we had to smile to each other when the singer came on stage and started to sing".
These kind of people are really ignorant and have no clue about music. Of course not everyone can (or should ;D) like HBs music but they just should appreciate them when they see them as an opening act even though they are waiting for their favorite band.
Anyway there are a lot of ingenuous persons at the CP-concerts and I'm not talking of the fans - I think of everyone who went there just to listen to Viva la vida and then sat down for the rest of the concert.

Did you read them at the Coldplay forums?
Howling Bells have a distinct sound. Unlike Snow Patrol that sounds like a thousand other bands out there. Yeah, I went to see Coldplay, I like some of their songs, but to me HB smoked em outta the building. I say, put their songs head to head, the Bells would destroy em. Sorry, I know you like Coldplay... ;D

Sorry, I know you like Coldplay... ;D I only like "Run" of Snow Patrol but the rest of the songs are just pure triviality to me. And the voice of the singer sounds annoying ;D Yes, I have read the comment about the depressing sound in the forums - I had a little argument about that with this guy, it was shortly after the concert took place. The comment about Juanita I found a few weeks ago in a review about the Düsseldorf CP Konzert. This guy had no idea what he was talking about, the review was bad and it's not very gentlemanlike to talk like that about a woman who is playing in front of him on stage while he can hide himself in the crowd. But this is a perfect example of a german guy ;D. I'm glad that Coldplay's management have chosen the Howling Bells for the tour - otherwise I would have never known them and that would be a huge gap. Of course today's Coldplay cannot be compared to the Howling Bells because they went so much into mainstream since X&Y and they have a male singer which also makes a huge difference. However songs from Coldplay's first two albums Politik, Clocks, A whisper or Trouble plus all the stuff they did before becoming famous can compete with all of the Howling Bells songs in my opinion. Still the Bells have something which I often miss in Coldplay songs - the certain dynamic, the edgier elements and the darker mood.

I am VERY glad that they were asked to do the Coldplay tour for the same reasons as you....Howling Bells are cool. Juanita is what makes them the band that they are. If it wasn't for her they wouldn't be the same, obviously, and more than likely I wouldn't be listening to them.

If it wasn't for her they wouldn't be the same, obviously, and more than likely I wouldn't be listening to them. You're right. It was also Juanita who captured my interest at this gig because her singing was so great. Of course I also was enchanted by the music but I always appreciate hearing good voices because I always loved to sing since I was a child and know what it takes. There are not so that much great live singers in these times - so it was really an experience to listen to her voice. You have to imagine I did not have any clue about the Bells and also did not care, was impatiently waiting for my boys (Coldplay)- came in while the Bells were playing, went back to my seat and then slowly realized that right now on this stage my new favourite band is playing - very strange moment indeed. Don't get me wrong: I still love Coldplay but I think it's ok to have two favourite bands at the same time. Though we should not underestimate the work of the other band members - Joel is such a passionate guitar player - I also recognised that at the gig - he's so absorbed that sometimes it seems like he does not get everything around him while he's playing. When I think of all these stupid guitars players of other bands who are posing with their guitars - Joel is a great alternation and he always shows that he is a real musician. I also love Brendan's dynamic bass and Glenn's powerful drums. All the four of them make the band what they are. Imagine Juanita in a another band - it would not be the same.
