See you all in Leeds tonight! I'll be getting there for about 7.00pm just as the doors open. There are 2 entrances to The Cockpit in Leeds. I was once at the front of the queue by the main entrance with everyone queuing behind me and then they opened the other door so everyone turned round and I was at the very back of the queue! :-(

I've just watched your first Youtube video - it's your usual top-quality production Rob!
Just to the left of where you were standing there was a gorgeous dark-haired girl in a hooped top - on her own! How she could be on her own we found difficult to fathom, but no wonder I didn't see you and Incoasterble as I was looking at her all the time till the Bells came on stage!
My mate reckoned she could have been Juanita's sister - until I told him she doesn't have a sister!

Thanks for the audio Rob. Downloading it at the moment. Sounds good dog. Let me guess, you used binaurals? iRiver coupled with descent mics always produces a pretty good sound. I'm still on minidisc, but as it stands right now it'll be years before I get with the new techmology. Anyway, thanks again. Edit: I just got to the part where blade is given credit for running this great message board. ;D Brendan: "Hey, hey, heyheyhey!" Good on ya for going out of your way, blade!

Almost certainly the small room. I was in Sheffield city centre this afternoon so thought I'd make a slight detour to pass the back of The Plug, and there were Brendan and Joel unloading their gear (at the bay nearest the small room). Of course, I had to go have a chat with them!

Speaking of it being dark, the video's I took at Leeds are far too dark to do anything with. On the positive side, my mate Les filmed some stuff on his camera and they look great. He was over on Joel's side in Leeds and I was on Brendan's side. Glad people are enjoying the Sheffield audio that I have put on Dime. For those who are unable to download from Dime I'll try and upload the audio to Megaupload over the next few days and post a link here. I'm at work all day though so it will be when I can fit it in in the evening. If anyone has already got the audio then I'm happy to let them do this job for me. Got to go to work now! Rob

16 September 2011Bearded MagazineHowling Bells @ The Plug, Sheffield 16.09.11
Right then Cold Specks. As okay as you were, the real attraction tonight is Australia’s Howling Bells. Those familiar with Howling Bells will no doubt see them as quite a raucous act – Juanita Stein leading the energy and chaos forward to a destructive point. Admittedly their fire burned the brightest with 2006’s debut and whilst their latest album The Loudest Engine has received mixed criticisms, the fire hasn’t burned out for them as a live unit. The darkness of the Plug seems a fitting venue for one of Australia’s darkest act.
‘Charlatan’ opens the night showing that Stein’s powerful attitude might even make Alison Mosshart retreat to the shadows. ‘Sioux’s lilting ethereal charm floats through the small venue whilst Juanita looks dazed and occupied in a trance herself. She takes maudlin control of her guitar during ‘Broken Bones’ which proves to be an extension of her enchanting voice. ‘Low Happening’ is a combination of stormy pop and gritty rock as melodies chime amongst the marching drums whilst ‘Blessed Night’ pierces the air with a benevolent menace. Howling Bells conjured their hypnotic charms tonight, and my oh my, what an experience it was.

28 September 2011Howling Bells released their new album ‘The Loudest Engine’ earlier this month, taking a different direction from previous album ‘Radio Wars’. It was this new sound which was the focus of their gig at Sheffield’s Plug.
The Sydney quartet kicked off with the heavy, swaggering ‘Charlatan’, a dynamic start to a fully engaging show. Frontwoman Juanita Stein took centre stage, evoking a modern day Kate Bush with her silky smooth vocals and enigmatic presence. Behind her, Glenn Moule, Brendan Picchio and Joel Stein were deeply engrossed in their instruments.
Recent single ‘Into The Sky’ was brought to life by Juanita’s transparent, otherworldly vocals, while a haunting ‘The Faith’ seemed to echo through the room. The thumping rhythms and wailing guitars of ‘The Loudest Engine’, meanwhile, showed the chemistry which flows between the band members, still as apparent as ever.
As they finished with debut single ‘Low Happening’ and an encore of ‘Live On’, the essence of Howling Bells was summed up – a lively rock-fuelled show of velvet vocals over strong hypnotic guitar riffs. It’s good to see the band are still genuinely into the music they play, and with their new album sounding beautiful live, they’re ones to watch out for.
