Howling Bells have often been compared to The Duke Spirit, and they are similar in that they use guitars, bass and keyboards and have a female singer (Leila Moss). But The Duke Spirit and a bit more rock-orientated, with a hint of blues. They have released two previous full-length albums ( Cuts Across The Land and Neptune) and at least one EP. They have another EP out in December (called Kusama) and then a new album (titled Bruiser) early in 2011. If the two new songs I've heard are anything to go by their new material is top-drawer. Check out the new video Northbound: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOfw_srNkRQand you can download for free the song Everybody's Under Your Spell from their website www.thedukespirit.com/. All you have to do is give an email address.

OMFActualG I love these guys! and her voice... just wow. They're playing Leeds Cockpit 19-Sep & London Scala 21-Sep. And I've just bought tix for the Cockpit! Woop! (so guess I'll be there two nights in a row now what with HB night before, not to mention HB in Manchester night after...) I'm like 'she sounds familiar' turns out The Duke Spirit play on this lush Unkle song Mayday on War Stories - album I've wholly luvved a long time...

Bad news for you, but maybe good news for me, if they rearrange it.
I really fancied going to this but couldn't manage four gigs in eight days, and Leeds two nights running.
But I'll see you at The Plug on Friday and The Cockpit on Sunday. I think I know what you look like......

The Leeds gig has been cancelled because they are appearing on the first show of the new Later With Jools Holland series: "The Duke Spirit have been invited on the first show of the new series of Later With Jools Holland - which goes out Tuesday night (live) and Friday night. Unfortunately this great news brings along a little sad news in its tow. The rehearsal/recording commitments of the show means we now have to postpone our Leeds Cockpit Show on Monday night and cancel Monday afternoon's instore. Hugely sorry Leeds, the show will be rescheduled and we will let you know the new date asap, tickets will remain valid, or if you can't wait refunds are available." The first show is on Tuesday 20th. See details here: www.bbc.co.uk/later/I haven't received my copy of The Duke Spirit's new album 'Bruiser' yet, but the issue of The Fly magazine that gave The Loudest Engine 4 stars out of 5 gave it 3 out of 5, if that means anything!

Cheers for that^ a friend saw that last week and was saying they were very good - in fact she wants to come with to their (to be rescheduled) Cockpit show now. I bought their new album 'Bruiser' on Sunday - I'm really liking it, I don't think for me it'll ever upstage anything from HB, TJF or BloodRedShoes, but still totally great and very much striking loadsa the right chords in terms of what I'm into. Particularly can't get enough of 'Surrender' atm. Howls,
