I found this radio interview with Joel from August 2003, when Waikiki were still on the go.
It's illuminating for a few reasons. The first is that it's the only thing I've ever read or heard that acknowledges that Brendan was a bona fide member of Waikiki. Joel says that Brendan joined Waikiki eight months previously (January 2003). To remind you, Juanita played bass and Jimmy (or Jimmeh) Brandon played rhythm guitar in Waikiki, so Juanita therefore moved to rhythm guitar when Brendan joined - January 2003.
We've seen Brendan playing bass in the video for "Complicated" and also on the Youtube video of Waikiki playing "Complicated" on "Rove". However, nobody has ever said before (as far as I know) that Brendan joined up a long time before they decided to move to England - he must have been with them for 18 months or more before they decided to come to our little corner of the world.
In this interview Joel calls Brendan "the missing piece to the puzzle" and says "he's what we've been looking for since we started". When asked about the future of Waikiki, Joel mentions "a whole new sound" and "a hundred new things".
Two of the "hundred new things" were changing their name and moving to England, which they did less than a year after this interview. And there was a whole new sound.

I've just noticed that the text says that the new bassist is Jimmy Brandon, which is, of course, wrong.
