Funny little interview with the band. With tales of an Australian bush fire and less than becoming groupies... Courtesy of Sam Wolfson. Picture courtesy of Lewis Chaplin. www.readplatform.com/howling-bells-interview/(click pic to enlarge)

It mentions a "messy break up" with Bella Union, and we've heard the band talk about "red tape" and "bureaucracy", but then I've also read that the Bella Union deal was for one record only.
I've never got to the bottom of why they left Bella Union. Anybody know any details? Bella Union were always championing how good they were, but maybe the band thought the record label wasn't big enough to give them the publicity/promotion they wanted/needed?

It's expressed somewhat in this article but I also remember reading or hearing somewhere, I can't remember which, where Juanita was saying that for the second album that the record company(Bella Union)wanted every song to sound just like Setting Sun and that they didn't really agree with that. They wanted to expand their repertoire, go in a new direction, and write the songs they wanted to write not what somebody else wanted them to.

Thx for posting. Must have been very terrifying to be stuck in such a fire.
I liked this passage:
Juanita: ‘I’m very protective of the guys, they’re like brothers to me. When they bring bitches on the bus, I never think they’re good enough. I gave some chicks a really hard time last trip.’
Very good girl - don't let them take your place. ;D
and that one: Juanita:‘Guys are too shy. The only guys that come up to me after shows are sleazy, odd and over 50. They’ve got that ‘˜nothing to loose’ kind of desperation.’
She is so right with it.

The Bella Union guys are famous from their band Cocteau Twins. While the band is quite okay, their stuff is still a bit annoying with gibberish lyrics sung in non-language and songs that sound more or less the same all the time. I find it hard to make much difference between their songs. It seems the Cocteau/Bella Union- guys think this is a winning formula and want their bands to do the same and have constant sound over whole album. For example Beach House, one very succesful Bella Union-band, has every song on their second album sounding more or less the same. One song stretched to album length. Now it´s easier to understand why.
Hats off to Bells for not doing this as I would have dropped interest in them if they had done "Cocteaus". Radio Wars is logical step in their path and not "Setting Sun parts 2-12".

Matt Bristowe interviews Simon Raymonde about the history of Bella Union who I guess is co-founder and also a member of Cocteau Twins which you mentioned chrome3d. I only watched about 4 minutes of it, but it might interest some of you. www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLvR6ZfADhE
