Another brilliant night last night! As we were walking along Oxford Road there were loads of people about including ticket touts looking for tickets to buy, not sell. What's going on? Then we realised - Lily Allen was in town, playing the main Academy, while Howling Bells were on at the smaller Club Academy next door.
How would the attraction of the Cockney pop princess affect the interest in our faves? No need to worry, as "Sold Out" notices were posted on the door and windows of the Club Academy.
Sunday night means an early curfew and an early start so we missed most of Chew Lips, so I wouldn't like to make any comment on them.
The Joy Formidable were next up and, just like in Sheffield 24 hours earlier, they were amazing. Ritzy looks as though she should be working on a cosmetics counter in a department store or as a bank clerk until she gets up on stage and starts pounding that guitar. Away from the stage the last thing you'd pick her to be would be a rock chick.
Howling Bells came on at 9.20pm and we were holding our breath to see what Juanita would be wearing tonight. We weren't disappointed! Powder blue top and matching skimpy shorts. Way hey! (I was going to make some comment about how fine her legs are here, but that wouldn't be appropriate!)
With the smaller venue than The Plug, the lower stage and the fact that the fans are right up to the stage rather than a few feet back, it got a bit hot and steamy, but that just added to the atmosphere. Fortunately we got to the front and I was actually sitting on the stage at the far right hand end in front of Joel (as usual!).
It was the same setlist (see below) as for Sheffield except that Ms Bells Song was added, which confused Brendan as he introduced it with, "Here's an oldie, but a goodie." He apologised afterwards (he meant Setting Sun, which came next), by saying he had read the set list wrong because he'd forgotten his glasses!
Juanita didn't wander through the audience to sing Golden Web as she had done the night before, probably because it was too rammed at the front. Discretion won through!
The band were really enjoying themselves and Juanita told the audience, "You kick ass!" as they were clearly enjoying themselves too. Tremendous stuff.
We were speaking to The Joy Formidable's Ritzy on their merchandising stall afterwards (she had invited the whole crowd to a party at the Kro Bar across the road afterwards) and she asked if we were going. No, we had to get back to Sheffield, and I said we'd seen them there too the night before. "You've seen the best two nights of the tour!", she said.
I doubt if Lily Allen was as good as this.
So, did anybody go to the party across the road?
