It's a bit like when you searched for the Christmas presents in your parents wardrobe before Christmas when you were a child (I only did it one time, honestly!) and on Christmas you have to pretent you haven't known about the presents. These are difficult times for artists, but it's a transition phase into a new music distribution system from which the artists will benefit (hopefully). There are new online record labels which rely on "leaking" the music by using a Creative Commons License, and there are artists which have gained a fanbase because the music was available online (not on MySpace only, but as real downloads). But of course, here it's about listening to the songs before the artist intended you to do so. I have great respect for the band, and I have great respect for the fact that some of you guys refrained from searching for the leak. As a result I think I agree: let's stay about the new songs until everybody can and wants to listen to them. It's only fair. Sorry that I couldn't hold my horses at first...

OK, I confess I'm a hypocrite too, because I have found it and downloaded it, and I only said what a I said earlier to try to stop everyone getting carried away.
Like Lee said, we shouldn't be encouraging it or pointing people in the direction of where to find it, but anyone who finds it independently, that's up to you and your conscience! Any discussion of the songs should be in separate threads so those who don't want to read them can avoid them.
Buy don't steal!

I think, for me, there are two things that come out of this:
1) People know when they download an album whether they will end up buying it or not. That's the important thing. If I ever download something I have a pretty strict rule of thumb that if I like it and play it then I buy it...full stop. If I hate it then I delete it there and then and not stash it away. The good albums get my cash, I don't end up buying a turkey and nobody is deprived of either new music or a livelihood. I just see it as quality control that let's me use my cash wisely. As long as I know I run by this personal rule then I'm happy enough.
2) The Bells need to have a long hard look at the label they've signed to. They get a part-finished, shoddy as anything website and now some donkey is pushing out promo copies anything up to nearly three months early. Any exec worth his or her salt knows, regardless of how much they have faith in people, that once a physical cd goes out then the album will be available and they know that while some will happily buy what they've downloaded there are others with no intentions of doing so. They've proved that they either have a very, very naive business plan for hyping the album, they are incompetent or they don't care about the artist. As nice as it is to hear the album I wish the label or people therein had used their head a bit more.
Money to the band, music to your ears, everybody wins.

Don't really see why it's such a big deal << Yeah I understand the whole "not sharing links in the threads" thing, but practically everyone on this forum is going to buy the CD anyway. And the leak is actually pretty good quality.
And honestly, we're all heading towards a future where releases like In Rainbows and Consolers Of The Lonely will be more common. I don't think it's a bad thing at all that fans will get to hear an album as soon as it's finished, rather than having to wait 6 months.
I also have the same personal rule as carpathian. And if I have to pick between buying an album from a band that sells million of copies (Coldplay, Snow Patrol) or an indie band struggling (Howling Bells) I'll always go for the latter.
As for the music itself... I think I like it more than their debut album. Yeah, I just said that. I don't like How Long, though - only song on the album I don't like.

Well said, carpathian. I've quite the same policy as you. What stands above all is that the band will be able to continue making music - which needs money. Damn, I love their music enough I'd even just give them some extra money to keep them going, without expecting an extra CD copy or something in return. Hey, HB, if you read this, just throw a PayPal button at me... ;D

Yeah, with you on that one - the age old cycle of write/record/make/hype/promote/ sell is now out of date. Promote the album by all means but the long gaps between an artist being happy with a finished product and fans being able to legally get it don't help anybody and just encourage fans to search elsewhere. It really is a shame the band don't have their own way to sell direct.....

There have been a lot of good points made by everyone here, which I find reassuring I suppose.
I actually feel a bit of a sense of anti-climax, not in the quality of the album, but because you're building yourself up and up in anticipation of early March and then suddenly it's there in front of you before you're really prepared for it.
The mounting anticipation of getting something you really want at some point in the future and getting more and more excited as that date approaches is half the pleasure, and that has been taken away.
Or maybe it's just me being daft, and there's still the great prospect of holding that shiny silver disc in your hand (I've never been one for stockpiling mp3 files on a computer or an ipod), along with its accompanying photos, artwork and, hopefully, lyrics.

No I'm totally the same an awful lot of people I know are too - there's something nice about going an buying a CD - putting it on at home or whatever looking at the artwork, lyrics, pictures etc. Id much rather have the physical CD anyday plus the quality of MP3 still cannot match the original for quality so. As for downloading - sadly its going to happen whether we the fans, general public, the artists themselves like it or not. I don't personally download music. However I do download the odd song of an artist, once in a blue moon to see if I like an album before parting with my money but if I don't like it I just delete it but I rarely do it these days. Knowing the album is online somewhere its very tempting to me right now to go looking for it as March cannot come quick enough - its the only album of the year I'm truly desperate to hear. I do too fully intend to buy it aswell but I don't feel good about myself doing it so maybe I'll hold off until March and itll be that much sweeter. Who knows in 5 minutes time I may just give in and do it anyway..

I succumbed to the temptation (it lies inside my heart!) too. It was just too much....having loved the first album and having played it to death, having loved every track....the chance to hear the second album ahead of time was too much to turn down. BUT....there's no way in the world that would stop me buying the new album. Can't wait to pyhsically hold it! Incidentally, there's some cracking stuff on the new album....Digital Hearts, It Ain't You, Nightingale...all awesome, and that's before even mentioning Chaos or Cities. It's going to be a superb follow-up, hopefully getting the recognnition it deserves.

Can anyone maybe explain to me why Cities Burning Down, originally a b-side has made it into the album tracklisting? Thats pretty unusual for a band to do that normally.

It must be unusual, yes. Here's my theory (guess, more like). The song, in its various guises, is well over three years old. I think it may have been written too late for the first album but they liked it so much they put in on two b-sides and started playing it live. It was called "This City's Burning Down" on Low Happening and "This City's Burning" on Wishing Stone and when they played it live. I don't know when they started playing it live - it could be the one simply called 'B-Side' on this set list from Milan, November 10th 2005: www.losingtoday.com/it/photobig.php?tipo=inbox&foto=496EThey didn't play it when I first saw them live in Feb 06, but they did play it three months later when I saw them again and I think they've played it more or less ever since. It was obviously one of their favourites and it was always received so well that they thought why not re-record it and put it on the new record? I'm not complaining!

incidentally looking back across this thread - Radio Wars Theme/Ms Bells Song on this promo is still one track, prob the same promo someone else mentioned as its only 10 tracks - last song was missing too.
So whoever said it - Radio Wars Theme/Ms Bells Song - its ow 2 songs obviously but do they sound familiar or what? Is it like one of those songs that has like a part I and II if you see what I mean or is one an instrumental going into the other?
Can't wait - even though its not the entire album - I still have not succumbed to downloading it and I think its cool I get to hear it in this stage as its like incomplete.
