Being quite new here I already managed to put the name of my favourite band into some posts ;D
The Church is an Australian band which formed in 1980 and who are still around producing finer and finer music. They had their biggest hit "Under The Milky Way" in 1988, which recently got some renewed attention because it was featured in the cult classic movie "Donnie Darko" and in the opening ceremony of the Commenwealth Games in Melbourne 2006. Lately, it also has been voted "Best song of the last 20 years in Australia" by thousands of readers of one of the biggest Australian newspapers (or magazines). Today they've mostly left the path of Under The Milky Way (which was an exception anyway). Their songs are still sometimes pure pop songs with jangly guitars, but they've also incorporated elements of Psychedelic Rock, Prog Rock and Space Rock. Generally, their songs are multi-layered with loads of guitars, great atmosphere, witty lyrics and you can detect new elements and facets even after hundredth listening.
I haven't seen the band in the Bells' list of bands they listen to on MySpace, but The Church certainly had a huge impact on lots of newer guitar bands. For example, Thom Yorke once said that The Church were part of his musical roadmap...
The Church have a huge catalogue of albums, solo works and side projects, too numerous to pick out THE album to recommend. Apart from their biggest success Starfish, which has Under The Milky Way on it and is a good album, there are some other older albums which are considered old classics by the fans:
Apart from them you should really try some of the newer stuff. I'd start with one of these:
There's also the pretty new solo album called Painkiller by The Church's singer and bassist Steve Kilbey, which is awesome.
If you need more information, let me know. I'm something like a walking The Church encyclopedia. ;D
