Hi All, Just noticed in Time Out that Howling Bells are supporting The Duke Spirit on Tues 30th September at the London Astoria. I've heard DS before but never really got into them - time to give them another chance?

I've been listening to The Duke Spirit quite a lot recently. They're excellent and singer Liela Moss is top notch. But still way short of Juanita of course! Check them out on Myspace or Youtube. However, having said how good The Duke Sprirt are, it would seem to me that the support/headline acts are the wrong way round! Pity I live too far from London cos it sounds as though it'll be a great night. I've never been to a gig where I've wanted to see both bands. And Lee, I agree with your last sentence.

Yes, I went to the Astoria gig.
They played just under 30 minutes. A mix of old and new stuff. I don't have a set list I'm afraid, but they played Low Happening and Cities Burning Down - I think 6 songs in all. They got a really good reaction from the Duke Spirit crowd, but the second half of their set was marred by really awful sound and lots of feedback. One of the songs was introduced as their new single, so I'm guessing that new releases must be not far away.
I can't wait to see them headlining, for a proper set, both in terms of set length and sound quality. I was looking to head to Kings College in a couple of weeks time, but the show seems to have been removed from the Myspace page, so I'm not sure that it is still happening.

Oh, I meant to say that The Duke Spirit were excellent.
In terms of the order of the bands, The Duke Spirit have a significantly bigger fan base than Howling Bells, and a really big live sound. Their stuff makes a lot more sense live than on CD, and they put on a really good show. I'd suggest trying to see them as a headliner though, because they suit that much more than their low order festival appearances where they don't come across so well.

I'm getting flashbacks now. Definitely Into The Chaos and Treasure Hunt were played. Thinking about it, Into The Chaos is the new single.
I'm a fan, but this was the first time I've seen them live. I obviously must have come across as a fan because I had a couple of people asking me about the band who were really enthusiatic about them, but had never heard of them. It really was a shame about the sound though.

Thanks for the info ez! Pity about the sound but good that you've seen the new stuff live and also that The Duke Spirit were excellent. Like Lee, I've bought a ticket for the Mercury Rev tour (Leeds) but I'm undecided about whether to stay for the headlners!
