It's sad in many ways to see the Cockpit's closure. Various Internationally acclaimed bands took to the stage there including but not limited to: Buzzcocks, Mumford & Sons, Boy George, Elastica, Embrace, Feeder, The Hives, Kula Shaker, New Model Army, Placebo, Shed 7, Amy Winehouse, Kaiser Chiefs, The White Stripes, Arctic Monkeys, Less than Jake, Placebo, Vampire Weekend, Plan B, Jake Bugg, London Grammar, The White Stripes, Queens of the Stoneage, Flaming Lips, The Libertines, The Killers, Fall Out Boy, Bloc Party, Coldplay... Blood Red Shoes, The Duke Spirit, The Joy Formidable, Howling Bells..
The 500 capacity main room seemed as upscale as live music venues got in Leeds following the closure of The Queen's Hall & until the recent opening of The Academy and Arena. Arguably they haven't drawn in as many big acts (& guaranteed capacity crowds) since the latter two opened their doors, and I think in this era people aren't as receptive to or as accepting of places with a more 'rough and ready' feel to them. Hence the owners' sister company are opening 'The Key Club' up on Merrion Street.
If not the fond memories, I will certainly miss the venue's proximity to the Rail Station and City - a significant factor in Europe's largest city not to have a mass transit system! Also I'll miss the unique acousitc feel of the arches / masonry; especially in Room 2 where things could sound truly wonderful if a band made the most of it!
