Howling Bells: TAS Tour Diary
Transplanting themselves from Sydney, Australia to London some years ago, Howling Bells are ushering in their tenth anniversary as a band with a swaggering new release, Heartstrings, their fourth album. Working with producer Catherine J. Marks (who engineered Foals' 2013 Mercury Prize-nominated Holy Fire), Howling Bells' latest is a boldy, confident record, resonant with muscular tracks like "Your Love" (video below) and "Possessed."
This August, Howling Bells will play London and the V Festival in Chelmsford, Essex, but in late May and June, the group undertook a lengthy headlining UK tour. The Alternate Side asked frontwoman Juanita Stein if she'd keep a photo diary of Howling Bells' travels through Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow:
Liverpool: East Village Arts Club:
Back in Liverpool! It’s been a good 10 years since we recorded our debut album here at Parr Street Studios, so it felt like an anniversary gig of sorts. We walked around town for a bit and found an awesome coffee joint on Bold Street, which you can see in the photo below. After playing a cool show later that night, we went pub hopping and did some extraordinary people watching along the way. Liverpool on a Saturday night is pretty intense. It's like one great united hens party. There's a lot of inflatable penises and party hats. Word.
Manchester: The Deaf Institute
What a cool venue this was (with some very cool wallpaper). Anyone who has lived on a tour bus will tell you that a little hospitality, after a long bumpy ride into a new town, goes a long, long way! With a friendly bar downstairs we basically spent the first half of the day in there, waking up. We hit Fopp Records in town at 5p.m. and played an in-store; it was awesome to see our new album out on the stands for the first time. The show was that night was probably our favourite of the tour thus far, an open-armed crowd made for an inspiring atmosphere. Post gig we found ourselves at the notorious Big Hands Pub nearby where we downed some drinks with the excellent Climbing Boys until closing time.
Glasgow: King Tuts
Awesome night again. We've played here a few times before, there's always a great crowd and they make you dinner in house which is, like, totally awesome! We played another FOPP instore that day, as you can see we got a little carried away with their amazing collection of rock 'n' roll posters. To our delight, the long awaited cream vinyl of our album Heartstrings arrived, a real treat. After playing the gig we again hit the town, a cool blues bar near the venue saw us sharing stories and laughs with some very cool locals, 'til we were kicked out and to bed it was!
