What made my day today wasn't pulling out of Leeds Station directly parallel to the Royal Train, not least on such a special day for both our Royal Family and our nation; but hearing of a new Mazzy Star album being on the way, and a fabulous sounding one at that if this song - California - from the forthcoming LP 'Seasons Of Your Day' - is anything to go on...

I bought Mazzy Star's latest album the other week, whilst I was hoping to get this on the release date as it turns out this was last September!! I'm astonished how far behind I get from myself - I have had a lot of time taken up by career commitments of late but really...? That said extensive usage of synchronised diaries, Google Keep & etc have me in a decidedly more organised place now than 6 months ago. And Winter is through round here Seasons Of Your Day is of course remeniscent of Mazzy Star's earlier / pre-'haiatus' work: excellent music and whilst I kind of hate saying it do see it, amongst other things of course, as some of the best 'background' music around for, well, any situation where you want to hold a clear conversation - I invariably get asked 'who is this, this is the best background music?'. Of course more is to be found within, the songs are beautiful and when given some much deserved attention are most entrancing. As regards Seasons Of Your Day to me what really pulls through is is the level of commitment with which the album, which has the most fascinating back-story imagniable, has been created, with Roback and Sandal as much producers as musicians. The feel of listening to one clear thread right through from soundwave to press is relatively unusual, in production the 'coversation' and 'intermediation' are far less apparent and it makes for a somewhat different outcome. Recordings from years recent and far passed are interwoven beautifully, creating an attention grabbing album making deeper and mature statements, whilst also just fantastic stuff with which to kick back, shut your eyes and get totally lost in.
